Job Description

FANNON | Emerge, Artist Alumni Residency (non-benefited)

FANNON/EMERGE seeks each year to bring together a small group of creative individuals who
have demonstrated a commitment to artmaking and inquiry, creating the most exciting and
austere environment possible for a concentrated period of artistic creation interaction, and
growth. They are located between the Painting and Printmaking Department Studios at
Education city and the Artists in Residency Studios at the Fire Station Museum in Doha, Qatar.
After compilation of the residency, artists could be considered for the fire station museum
residency in Paris studio.

FANOON/EMERGE draws its intensity from the community created through the talent and
energy of the participants and the distinguished Faculty of Resident and Visiting Artists. They
provide them with support and critical assistance.

FANOON/EMERGE Founded by The Department of Painting and Printmaking faculty. The
program provides an atmosphere where participants are encouraged to develop a new body of
work for a solo exhibition at the fire station Museum, Doha. Artists will have access to a
personal studio space on campus and the fire station Museum. As well as access to the VCU
facilities, Mathaf Library, and Production studio at the fire station museum. In addition, in
collaboration with Al Bahie Auction house and Bissan Gallery, both partners will work with the
artists to develop a professional portfolio for the art market; his/her work will be as well featured
as part of the current contemporary auction in Doha. In addition, Al Bahie will support the
exhibition production, including framing, catalog, and promotion materials.

Award: The successful candidate will receive an artist’s fee of 60,000 QR paid as a bi-monthly stipend. The selected artist will serve as a teaching assistant 16 hours per week, working with one of the department professors.

Preference will be given to graduates from the Department of Painting and Printmaking at VCUARTS, Qatar.

Applicants must already hold a valid QID to work or reside in Qatar.

Adjunct Instructor – VCUarts Qatar – Interior Design (Non Benefited)

The Virginia Commonwealth University School of Arts Qatar (VCUarts Qatar) is recruiting for the Fall 2022 semester within the Interior Design program. The program is specifically looking for an instructor to teach IDES 330: Business of Design course:

Please note that we cannot guarantee the availability of adjunct vacancies from semester to semester. However, we invite qualified applicants who are willing to accept part-time teaching work on an as-needed basis to apply.

Position Responsibilities:

This course introduces basic global economics and general design business concepts such as the free enterprise system, legal forms of business and financial considerations. It also surveys business and management practices such as planning, decision-making, communication, global ethics, marketing, human resources, finance and entrepreneurial skills needed to open a design business. The course is also cross listed as: FASH 330/GDES 330.

Required Qualifications:

  • A BFA degree in interior design or allied disciplines, i.e., architecture.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff,
    and student environment or commitment to do so as an employee at VCUQatar.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Preference is given to candidates with experience teaching to a diverse undergraduate student population in the Arab Gulf or larger MENA region.
  • Additional preference is given to candidates who have secure the National Council for Interior Design Education NCIDQ and/or the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification LEED GA/AP.

Major Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the leadership of VCUarts Qatar as a whole.
  • Works with VCUarts Qatar’s administrative team as a collaborative, solutions oriented partner.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.
  • Substantial executive/administration management experience and supervision of staff.
  • Working knowledge of human resources, financial policies and practices, public affairs, and institutional strategy development.
  • Understanding of the work performed by safety and facilities offices, technology services, and communications.
  • Proven ability to interpret policies and procedures, analyze data and make recommendations and decisions.

Chair, Department of Interior Design

Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar (VCUarts Qatar)
This full-time, 12-month position is at the rank of Assistant/Associate/Professor, is non-tenure-eligible, and begins July 1, 2022

Application Deadline: Review of applications will continue until position is filled.

  • Serve as an advocate for the department within the school, the university and to its various external constituencies—accrediting agencies, advisory boards, industry partners, and governmental organizations;
  • Work collaboratively with the chairs of other departments in supporting the strategic goals of VCUarts Qatar, to be flexible and able to work in a team environment with the potential to develop new strategies for programming;
  • Foster regular and ongoing collaborations with the VCU home campus in Richmond, Virginia;
  • Inspire and evaluate faculty in the areas of teaching, research and service, including   mentoring new and current faculty and guiding faculty through the promotion process;
  • Oversee all areas of departmental administration, including finance, recruitment and admissions, course scheduling, personnel, and facilities and equipment;
  • Develop a broad multi-disciplinary network of design professionals, architects, and artists, locally and globally, that can support employment and internship opportunities for students, serve as guest critics and lecturers, provide innovative workshops, and facilitate student engagement in design competitions;
  • The Chair will be expected to contribute to new knowledge in the design field or a related discipline through research and/or creative work, which could be in the form of an active professional practice, and aspire to be recognized for creative and/or scholarly contributions at the national and/or international level;
  • Teach courses in areas of the curriculum corresponding with their expertise; mentor students; and integrate innovative pedagogical and technological approaches and multicultural perspectives into instructional methods and ensure department faculty do the same;
  • In support of the University’s strong commitment to inclusion, diversity, and accessibility, the Chair is expected to foster a welcoming and equitable learning environment for all students, faculty, and staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • MFA, MArc, MDes, PhD, or equivalent graduate degree in interior design, architecture, or allied disciplines.
  • A minimum of five years of university-level academic instruction beyond the TA and/or adjunct level and appropriate administrative experience are preferred.
  • Ability to articulate a design vision and mission that can garner international acclaim through collaborative and inspired leadership in design practice and research within the academic department.
  • Acquaintance with the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) standards, or other professional accreditation standards.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who secured the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ), or are well-acquainted with similar professional or industry certifications.
  • Experienced designer and educator at the forefront of emerging practices in interior design and architecture emerging trends such as—Integrative Design Projects (IDPs) Building Information Modeling (BIM), Sustainability and Environmental Ecology, Coding and Parametric Design, Evidenced-Based Design, Environment and Behavior Sciences, and Immersive Media—VR/AR/XR (Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, & Mixed Reality).
  • A well-developed scholarly, creative or professional portfolio with the potential for multi- disciplinary applications and interest in developing external partnerships appropriate to complement and expand existing expertise in the department.
  • Experience developing and leading in a highly ambitious and collegial team environment;
  • Excellent time management and excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
  • Demonstrated competence in creating a trusting and inclusive culture; experience recruiting, hiring, and retaining under-represented faculty and staff, and leadership in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion among all students, faculty and staff.
