Job Description

Senior Surveyor

This is considered an intermediate to advanced level Surveyor position.

The primary function is to examine and report on vessels and other marine structures during and after construction relative to compliance with the applicable requirements for maintaining the vessel in Classification with ABS and meeting associated statutory and special service requirements related to Safety of Life at Sea, Loadline, Tonnage, Cargo Gear, and Pollution Prevention Certification.

What You Will Do:

  • Acts as a professional specialist for the organization in the application of related rules, regulations, requirements, concepts, principles, and processes.
  • Performs routine surveys on classed vessels, platforms, or other marine structures and at manufacturers for classification and compliance with statutory requirements.
  • Prepares technically accurate and timely reports of inspections and surveys performed.
  • Engages in contact with clients to resolve problems within area of expertise.
  • Maintains survey files in an orderly and up-to-date manner in area of responsibility.
  • Maintains active awareness of new methods and developments affecting the technical scope of assigned responsibilities and makes recommendations for changes in the surveying processes and safety programs as warranted by such developments.  Recommends new approaches to problems encountered and makes changes in methods, procedures, or design where necessary.
  • Plans, schedules, and coordinates various phases of surveying work and monitoring the quality of service on work performed.
  • Monitors work and projects performed by subordinate surveyors to ensure maintenance of quality, content, consistency, and continuity of work performed.
  • Provides leadership, guidance, and training to lower level and/or less experienced surveyors.
  • Promotes the services and capabilities of ABS to present and potential customers.

What You Will Need:

Education & Experience

  • Ability to develop a working knowledge of ABS Rules, Guides, statutory regulations, and related instructions, as well as the ABS Employee Safety Policy.
  • Ability to read engineering plans and have a basic understanding of shipbuilding practices and vessel operations.
  • Ability to perform surveys in the prescribed format.
  • Knowledge of computer programs or software packages related to job responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of related technical interfaces required for group project work.
  • Knowledge of ships’ engineering systems and machinery.
  • Ability to communicate, orally and in writing, pertinent information relative to assigned area of technical expertise. Ability to analyze problems and propose solutions.
  • Responsiveness to customers.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality and Environmental Management Systems.

Minimum years of Experience

  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience working as a Senior Surveyor I.
  • Understanding of ABS strategic technical positioning in their respective sector of the marine industry or
  • Minimum fifteen (15) years’ experience in an Engineering or Survey Capacity with an IACS member Classification Society.

Required/Preferred Education Requirements

  • Qualifications from a tertiary institution within a relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum two (2) years program); or
  • Qualifications from a marine or nautical institution and relevant seagoing experience as a certificated ship officer, and
  • Proficiency in the English language commensurate with the scope of statutory certification and services and, before assignment, with their future work.

Job Description

Under direct supervision of a project manager may be assigned multiple projects depending on complexity or will oversee the execution of a phase(s) for a larger project. Responsible for coordinating the day-to-day activities between Client, Project Manager and supporting teams. Involved in all aspects of the project over the entire project life (initiate, plan, execute, control, close) to meet business objectives.

Job Duties/Roles

  1. Act as the primary point of contact for client on assigned projects
  2. Coordinate scheduling and staffing of project, ensuring we have properly trained team members fo the project
  3. Develop schedules/timelines/cost plans that support the business objectives, established budgets, resources, and project deliverables for each project
  4. Coordinate day-to-day execution of the overall project delivery process
  5. Responsible for monitoring progress of the project, relative to actual time expended, fees invoiced, and expenses incurred versus those budgeted
  6. Resolve work related client issues including quality of work and billing
  7. Responsible for monitoring project accounts receivable concerning the owner’s account and working with them to maintain timely payment
  8. Monitor the project to ensure maintenance of quality, content, consistency and continuity of work performed
  9. Prepare technically accurate and timely reports related to the project
  10. Prepare and submit time charge records and expense reports in a timely manner in accordance with company procedures
  11. Maintain files in an orderly and up-to-date manner in areas of responsibility
  12. Other duties as required

Qualifications

  1. The human relations skills necessary to maintain positive client contacts and provide leadership and motivation, when required, to other staff members and peers.
  2. Ability to effectively speak and write English fluently.
  3. Ability to work positively with the wide range of individuals involved in the project.
  4. Ability to identify, analyze and solve complex and unique project related problems.
  5. Possesses good communication skills both orally and in writing technical issues to personnel in who may or may not be in related technical fields.
  6. The desire and ability to work as a member of a team.
  7. Ability to communicate orally and in writing, complex technical information, to laymen or experts in other technical fields.
  8. Ability to undertake short- and long-term planning to provide for efficient and effective scheduling of work assignments.
  9. Responsive to customers queries.
  10. Advanced skills in office automation software (some of which may include spreadsheets, word processing, presentation, mail/calendar/scheduler programs).  Ability to learn additional programs as required.
  11. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  12. Excellent arithmetic skills.
  13. Advanced level clerical skills.
  14. Ability to handle routine and non-routine business matters without supervision.
  15. Ability to simultaneously handle multiple assignments and prioritize workload accordingly.
  16. Demonstrated ability to interface with levels of personnel.
  17. Working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality and Environmental Management System.

Minimum years of Experience

Typically requires a minimum of 3 years of relative work experience in a clerical or technical support position, or a combination of substantial experience and education.
